Event description
Fancy painting a lantern or being part of a lion dance ensemble? Pick up some nifty skills from our country’s beloved practitioners.

About this Event

Remember those traditional joss sticks makers, rangoli artists and lion dance troupe members? Despite rising competition, many intangible cultural heritage practitioners remain passionate about their craft. Meet My Craftsman brings Singaporeans to visit nine of these craftsmen, and at the same time, have their hands at practicing them!

About Singapore Hok San Association

The Singapore Hok San Association is home to Singapore’s oldest lion dance troupe. Formally known as Yi Yi Tang Lion Dance Troupe, the troupe was founded in 1920 by Chinese migrant Lee Yi Sheng. Its lions are known for their graceful and gentle demeanour. This MCF2020 experience will allow you to experience a live lion dance demonstration and pick up some basic performance skills. You will also be given the low down on the troupe’s history.

About the Craftsman

Sugen Ramiah can trace his interest in lion dance to the tender age of four when he was first exposed to the artform after witnessing live performances at a market near his home in Clementi. He joined the Singapore Hok San Association in 2014 to pursue his interest more actively. Despite cultural and language differences, he is thankful to have received an immense amount of support from the troupe. For instance, his Cantonese-speaking trainers and seniors do their best to guide him in English.

He shared with MCF2020 that lion dance requires the physical strength and endurance of a martial arts practitioner and the flexibility and coordination of a dancer.

The association’s lion dance troupe meets every Sunday for training. The session typically starts at 10am. After warming up, members break off into two groups - one handles percussion instruments and the other mans the lion’s head. During Chinese New Year, the troupe might be hired for up to a dozen performances a day. To acclimatise their bodies for the season, the team starts intensive training from as early as November the year before.

On the satisfaction he gets from performing, Mr Sugen said: “I’ve had participants come up to me to shake my hand or tap me on my back saying, it was ‘a job well done’ or ‘thank you for bringing so much joy and happiness’. There is that clear sense of satisfaction at the end of it alongside the feeling of having achieved something.”
