The history at Mount Pleasant is not very well documented. Few people use this road. Perhaps this is part of the reason why it managed to earn the coveted title of an ideal “heritage” road. We have only 5 “Heritage Roads” in Singapore. Mount Pleasant Road is one of them. It takes a lot to earn that “heritage” label. We have lost most of our heritage roads to developments.
Anyone in a hurry along this road will be able to tell you that Mount Pleasant Road is a scenic road to walk or drive on. But the history on this road is seldom mentioned. While the road may seem rustic with an old-world charm, in reality, fierce battles were once fought here during World War 2.
The Black & White Mansions here are stately reminders of the once mighty British Empire. One building, at 153 Mount Pleasant Road stands out as the Senior Police Officers’ Mess (SPOM). The air is crisp, and the scenery soothing to the eye… The short walk to Kopi Sua is but a bonus.
We meet at Marymount MRT (EXIT A, street level), at 8.30am, 22nd May 2024 (VESAK DAY). From there, we’ll take a bus to the junction at Mount Pleasant Road and Thomson Road where the tour begins. This tour will end at the bus stop in front of Fun’s Florist along Thomson Road, possibly about 11.30am, maybe 12pm.
