About this event
Heading into National Service (NS) is a big milestone especially if you’re moving from the comfort of school life (whether in Singapore or overseas boarding) into the structure and demands of Basic Military Training and beyond.
This specially curated event is designed for 17–18 year-old boys studying in Singapore’s international schools or in boarding schools abroad who will return to Singapore for NS after completing their high school diploma, IB, or A-levels.
The 3-Part Game Plan
Part I. Lifestyle Medicine: The Health & Lifestyle Game Plan for NS & Beyond (Doctor-led)
Dr Neil Forrest and Dr Peter Chiu, both Family Physicians from Osler Health International, will introduce the Six Pillars of Lifestyle Medicine -evidence-based habits to build physical and mental resilience. You will learn practical strategies for:
- Staying strong and fit without burning out
- Eating to fuel performance (and recovery)
- Maximising sleep in challenging environments
- Managing stress and mindset shifts
- Building meaningful social support
- Avoiding risky habits that derail health
These pillars are not just for NS, they will serve you well into university and beyond.
Part II. Real-Life Voice: My Transition from Boarding School to NS
Euan Woodworth, a current National Serviceman Full-Time (NSF) who returned from a UK boarding school to serve NS in Singapore in 2024, will share an open and honest account of his journey. He will talk about what the transition was really like, from the physical challenges to the emotional changes and social adjustments of this major life shift.
Euan will also share how applying the Six Pillars of Lifestyle Medicine, sometimes without even realising it helped him adapt and stay grounded. Plus, he will offer insights into Basic Military Training and the different NS units that recruits can be assigned to.
Part III. Breakout / Q&A Session (Boys Only)
A candid, informal space for boys to ask questions and hear honest perspectives, led by Euan Woodworth and supported by peers serving in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), and Singapore Police Force (SPF). This part is for boys only to encourage open conversation and real talk.
