DSE: Data Science: new tricks for Economics

Economists routinely use data to answer quantitative questions. One important question that has become increasingly relevant with the advent of decision making based on machine learning is whether discrimination according to race or some other personal characteristic inadvertedly occurs in approving mortgage applications. We will look at how economists armed with training in data science can approach this question from different angles using a well known dataset of mortgage application data from a time period when such discrimination might have occurred.Speakers' Profile:Asst Prof Denis Tkachenko’s research focuses on theoretical econometrics and its applications in macroeconomics and finance, and was published in the top five and top field economic journals. At NUS, he teaches classes in econometrics, forecasting and machine learning. All attendees to this Masterclass should be fully vaccinated (according to MOH guidelines - https://www.moh.gov.sg/covid-19/vaccination). An individual is considered vaccinated if he/ she has been: a) fully vaccinated, i.e. has received the appropriate regimen of World Health Organisation Emergency Use Listing (WHO EUL) vaccines including their respective duration post-vaccination for the vaccine to be fully effective, and had their vaccination records ingested in MOH’s national IT systems ; or b) recovered from COVID-19 within the last 180 days.
