Event description
Visit little-known places of worship, observe their rituals and cultural practices and partake in their traditional meals!

About this Event

Every F1 season, we see 10 religious leaders standing along the F1 track to bless the road. People can typically identify these religious leaders - such as the Christian bishop and Catholic ‘Father’, or the Buddhist monk. But there are religions and faiths in Singapore that are less-heard of, though they are celebrated by some of our local communities. We will be visiting their sacred sites and places of worship.

About Chesed-El Synagogue

Chesed-El is Hebrew for “Bountiful Mercy and Goodness of God”. Over the years, the synagogue has been at the centre of Jewish activities for festivals such as Pesach, Shavuot and Sukkot, as well as the Jewish New Year and Day of Atonement.

Judaism in Singapore has roots going back to the 1800s when Jewish traders migrated from India and the Middle East. To cater to the growing community, the Maghain Aboth Synagogue was constructed in 1878. Disagreements between Sephardic and Ashkenazi Jews about how its religious services were conducted led to the construction of the Chesed-El Synagogue in 1905.

Rabbi Asher Fettmann who runs the Chesed-El Synagogue today started out as an entrepreneur working in industries ranging from jewellery, electronics, clothing to business consultancy. He told MCF2020 that his entrepreneurial background has helped prepare him for his role as rabbi. He said: “Being an entrepreneur or rabbi… it’s the same. The only difference is that you are not selling any products. You’re selling, understanding and teaching about faith, religion and God. Sometimes, the latter may be more difficult than selling a product, but we reach some success sometimes.”
