BREATHING ROOM is a multimedia installation that invites viewers to take refuge from the deluge of noise and distractions of contemporary life. In a culture where the experience of viewership is marked by mind-numbing consumption and overwhelm due to our 24/7 news cycle and the ubiquity of screens competing for our attention, BREATHING ROOM offers a rare pause.

Through gentle shifts in light and color and ambient sounds composed by Los Angeles-based producer Teebs, BREATHING ROOM creates a meditative enclosure much like a cove: it shelters viewers from the elements while providing the quiet necessary to behold one’s inner life and the outside world more clearly. This sanctuary of stillness, breath, and reflection is not for viewers to zone out, but to reconnect with themselves so that they can re-engage the world with greater care.

Each artwork transitions through a series of visuals designed to cultivate attentiveness and wonder. Lumina acts as a “digital fireplace” where viewers can gather around a light source that prompts introspection and connection. Finally, a series of screen-based animations, including Rise and Aura Flow, draw upon movements and forms found in the natural world.

Repurposing technologies typically used for advertising and entertainment, such as LED lights and TV screens, BREATHING ROOM halts the dopamine rush of constant media input, allowing viewers to focus instead on evolving forms and colors and to simply soak in the light washing over them. In this state of active presence, viewers may experience the capaciousness and clarity that arises from even brief moments of quiet, prompting reflection on what it means to truly see.
