"Over Crossing" by Quanda Johnson
A meditation over crossings escaped enslaved Africans made from bondage to liberty, "Over Crossing" is a sunrise journey by canoe across Lake Monona evoking through a serenade of Negro spirituals the moment when freedom and consciousness merge.
Quanda Johnson is a New York based "creative maker" currently a doctoral candidate at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
Location:
The performance begins and ends on Madison's Isthmus. Specific location will be provided after registration.
Safety and Accessibility:
One to two persons only and one of them must be proficient at paddling a canoe. If only one person is in attendance, then she/he must be a proficient paddler. (Reservations in groups of 2 only, even if one person is attending.)
Participants will be provided with a life-vest or is encouraged to provide their own, if that is their preference.
Since we are dealing with a transport vehicle that can be very unsteady/unstable, should someone with accessibility needs participate, they must be accompanied by someone who can aid in their getting in and out of the canoe and who will take responsibility for them should there be any mishap during transit.
This event occurs outside. Participants may wear masks if they desire, but are not required to do so. All must be vaccinated and show a vaccination card. The experience is a sublime evocation of a meta-physical state of being; the social interaction is limited.

Donations will be accepted as free-will. No minimum is asked. In case of bad weather, event will be rescheduled.
A Home Stretch Performance
Home Stretch is a “distributed festival” of small artistic acts taking place in Madison, WI between the summer solstice (21 June) and the autumn equinox (22 September). By appointment, local artists are offering intimate performances and other arts experiences throughout the summer.
In this time of transition between COVID lockdowns and eventual reopening, Home Stretch explores how forms of performance and other kinds of aesthetic sociality can help us re-learn how to be together.
The title Home Stretch refers less to the idea of the final part of a race, since the pandemic is far from over. Rather, it’s about artists stretching their homes into public space, and the public stretching out of lockdown bit by bit. These art experiences are a chance to stretch both social and artistic muscles.
All events are free to attend, though some performers may pass a hat or request donations to specific causes. Information and registration is at homestretch.art.
