Once upon a time, “Punggol” refers to that long beautiful road that leads to the popular seafood epicentre. To most baby boomers, “Punggol” had only one attraction – SEAFOOD. No one paid any “scant” attention to the history, heritage or culture.
From attap huts to “sar lee chu” (zinc roof house), to the current modern Digital Punggol, most of us have almost forgotten that not too long ago, Punggol was once a kampung complete with pig, poultry and veggie farming.
Nobody bothered about that famous “Matilda House”. In fact, there were also some forgotten and abandoned colonial houses that nobody bothered to document about. Come with me, and we’ll reminisce and try to find that long lost beautiful country road that we once knew as “Punggol”.
We meet at Punggol Coast MRT station, 9am on the 11th October 2025, SATURDAY. Take Exit 2 and meet me at Toastbox on the ground floor. We’ll decide if we will include Coney Island. And of course, there is no point telling you that Punggol is now a modern riverfront, digital community.
A message to those who have taken this tour with Uncle Chris last year – you should really come again this year. The landscape at Punggol has changed so much in just one year. Part of the old Heritage Road is now open to the public.
