[QiXi] The Vanishing Practices of the Hokkiens of the 7 Mothers

The Qixi Festival (七夕节), also known as the Double Seventh Festival or Chinese Valentine's Day, is a traditional Chinese holiday that celebrates the annual meeting of the mythical lovers, Zhinü (the Weaver Girl) and Niulang (the Cowherd).

Come join us for a unique event at the Wu Lui Sien Sze Temple where we will explore the disappearing traditions of the Hokkiens of the 7 Mothers. Discover the rich cultural heritage and practices that have been passed down through generations. This in-person event is a great opportunity to learn and connect with the community.

According to legends, there are Seven Fairies in the heaven and they are affectionately known as the Seven Mothers (七娘妈) by the Hokkien, in order to express their utmost respect for them. They regards the Seven Fairies as the protectors of children and hence the name Seven Mothers too.

From birth until the age of 16, Hokkiens believed the Seven Fairies (Mothers) will take care of the children. From cultural beliefs which also involves the vanishing joss paper and crafts such as the "pavilion" of the Seven Mothers (七娘妈亭) are made in express of their gratitude to the Seven Mothers. They are the faith and beliefs for most parents especially in the yesteryears.

Is there still a place for this intangible cultural heritage and practice in the bustling city of Singapore? Understand the vanishing rites and rituals of the Hokkiens as we embark on this tour to learn about the origin of QiXi Festival, the Chinese Temples, the Seven Mothers and the practices by the Hokkiens. Could we still preserve this cultural practice while promoting them ?--
