SBA5.0 International Synthetic Biology and Biosecurity Conference in Africa
Overview
About SBA 5.0
SBA5.0 arrives at an extraordinary moment in global science governance. With the release of the world’s first global policy framework on Synthetic Biology, nations now have an unprecedented roadmap to guide responsible innovation, strengthen regulatory readiness, and accelerate biotechnology development at scale. For Africa—home to immense biodiversity, a rising innovation ecosystem, and rapidly evolving health and climate challenges—this is a pivotal opening to shape its sovereign bioeconomy on its own terms.
Anchored in the theme Resilient Futures: Engineering Biology, AI & Biosecurity for Africa’s Sovereign Bioeconomy, SBA5.0 will position Africa not as a passive adopter of global policy, but as an active architect of regionally grounded strategies that leverage engineering biology and AI to drive resilience, competitiveness, and long-term prosperity.
Hosted in vibrant Accra, Ghana, SBA5.0 will convene global policymakers, scientists, industry leaders, bio-entrepreneurs, investors, youth innovators, and One Health experts to explore how Africa can operationalize the new global Synthetic Biology policy—adapting its principles into national strategies, governance systems, innovation pipelines, and biosecurity architectures that protect and empower African societies.
The conference will illuminate how synthetic biology and AI can transform Africa’s future: powering climate-resilient agriculture, elevating health systems, enabling distributed biomanufacturing, supporting green industrialization, expanding genomic and data sovereignty, and safeguarding ecosystems through next-generation biosurveillance and cyberbiosecurity.
Over three days, SBA5.0 will feature high-level policy roundtables responding directly to the global policy’s priority areas—risk assessment, ethical governance, capacity building, regulatory harmonization, and equitable benefit-sharing—while connecting these themes to Africa’s development needs, scientific ambitions, and continental frameworks.
Conference Tracks:
- Climate-Resilient Agriculture, Food Systems & Sustainable Production
- Precision Health, Diagnostics, Therapeutics & Pandemic Preparedness
- Biodiversity, Ecosystems, Environmental Protection & Climate Adaptation
- Industrial Biotechnology, Bioprocessing & the Circular Bioeconomy
- AI, Machine Learning, Computational Biology & Digital Biofoundries
- Biosafety, Biosecurity, Cyberbiosecurity & One Health
- Biopolicies, IP, Standards, Global Policy Alignment & Genetic Sovereignty
- Youth Innovation, Bio-Entrepreneurship & Workforce Development
More than a conference, SBA5.0 is a continental response mechanism—translating global policy into African action, empowering countries to build regulatory maturity, mobilize investment, harness indigenous knowledge, and shape the global bioeconomy with authority and vision.
Join us in Accra from 7–9 October 2026 as Africa defines its place in a new era of global synthetic biology governance. Together, we will engineer resilient futures and advance the continent’s sovereign leadership in Synthetic Biology, AI, and Biosecurity.
