Event description
One of the first Black US college rugby coaches builds a new team at a white university & finds that success isn’t measured in championships

About this event

About The Film

Frank McKinney is one of the first Black college rugby coaches in the United States. The new rugby program at Queens University of Charlotte might be an experimental one for the predominantly white Southern institution, but it’s Frank’s dream to build a program and bring diversity to the game he loves. Frank uses scholarships to provide access to education for first-generation college students. Character and good grades required. Rugby skills? Optional.

In just two seasons, Frank builds a team of some of the most diverse students at Queens. His devotion is palpable, but it comes at a price. As Frank and his players win their way toward the championship, his personal life takes hit after hit, and he must face the consequences of putting all of his focus and passion into the team. While he dominates on the field, his self-esteem is often in flux as he strives to prove himself to his father and keep his love life from falling apart.

Frank’s is an underdog story that celebrates family while challenging the status quo in higher education with regard to diversity, equity, and inclusion. He knows that many of the challenges he faces in his job are a result of systemic racism in higher education, but Frank is determined to change the narrative as he inspires hope in his players for the lives they seek to build.
