MY WRITING JOURNEY: Writing Great Lit that Entertains!

About this Event

After dropping out of medical school, Ovidia Yu wrote several award-winning short stories and plays. She started writing her Aunty Lee Mysteries featuring a kaypoh, good-hearted Peranakan cook-sleuth after her mother’s cancer diagnosis triggered an ‘Aunty’ support system.

All Ovidia’s mysteries are set in Singapore—present and past--and show the habits, hearts and values and of law-abiding, food-obsessed, Singaporeans doing their best to solve ghastly murders and live good lives, often with comic consequences.

In this conversation, Ovidia shares about writing in, about and beyond Singapore, including the routines, rituals and rules in her writing journey that led her to win the S.E.A. Write Award 2016.

ABOUT THE S.E.A. WRITE TALKS 2020

The S.E.A. Write Talks are a series of public conversations featuring recipients of the S.E.A. Write Awards 2016-2018: Ovidia Yu, Chia Joo Ming and Peter Augustine Goh. The conversations focus on each author's body of work and their writing journeys.

ABOUT THE S.E.A. WRITE AWARD

Since 1979, the S.E.A. Write Award, or the Southeast Asian Writers Award, has been presented annually to poets and writers in Southeast Asia.

The awards are given to a writer from a country that is part of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) though not all countries in ASEAN have been represented every year. The award is sometimes given for a specific work by an author and sometimes awarded for lifetime achievement. The types of honoured works vary, and have included poetry, short stories, novels, plays, folklore, and scholarly and religious works.

The ten countries which comprise the ASEAN region are Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, The Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
