About the Event
This introduction to Southeast Asia module aims to give attendees an opportunity to grapple with some of the key development opportunities and challenges in Southeast Asia. Most Southeast Asia countries are rapidly growing and collectively home to over 650 million people (third largest population in the world after China and India), and its growing middle-class represents a huge opportunity for businesses and professionals in the new decade. However, challenges also exist in the region, including the broader geopolitical landscape (i.e. US-China rivalry), governance and political issues and domestic instability. This module aims to equip attendees with a basic appreciation of developments in Southeast Asia so that they can take advantage of and navigate these long-term trends unfolding in our region.
This module was originally designed with the Singaporean student in mind, but can be suited for/ targeted at any ASEAN student with little to no prior knowledge of our region.
About the Organiser
This workshop is organised by The Young Seakers, a regional non-profit organisation by youths, for youths. We aim to nurture the next generation of ASEAN-China savvy youth leaders by harnessing the potential of the ASEAN-China region.
SEAkers Learn is our latest initiative to maximise ASEAN-China awareness and knowledge building by delivering high-quality educational content catered to students and young working professionals. Participants will have access to content spanning a variety of ASEAN-China topics, introduced by speakers who have insider knowledge and expertise in the area.
About the Speaker
Jefferson Ng is currently working as an Associate Research Fellow at the Indonesia Programme, S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies. He researches on political and security developments in Indonesia daily. At TYS, he leads the ASEAN Curriculum Team.
Prior to joining the workforce, he was an environmentalist and organized Earth Hour 2015 in NUS and spearheaded various sustainable energy initiatives. He now runs a bread rescue initiative near his place and enjoys rock climbing in his free time.
