Event Details

Professor Kevin Bell, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Digital Futures) at Western Sydney University will be our expert speaker at the next Sydney Gamification & Interactive Experience Meetup.

In his doctoral research, Bell analysed gamified courses at a number of international universities, running that against the literature on motivation and engagement, asking the question: ‘why does this game, activity or lesson engage students?' In an attempt to support academics with their course delivery, he breaks games and non-game activities in an examination of ‘Flow’ and intrinsic motivation under the banner headline of Gameful Design.

In this presentation, Bell will share some of his case studies and his analysis that is applicable to both educational and corporate training environments.

Professor Kevin Bell, Ed.D., Pro Vice-Chancellor (Digital Futures), Western Sydney University

Professor Bell leads Western Sydney University’s efforts toward the goal of high-quality, digital initiatives and online programs based on industry and academic standards.

Originally from Newcastle in the UK, and after receiving his B.Sc in Analysis of Science and Technology from Manchester University he spent nine years in Japan where he taught English in high schools, a private language school and led a Corporate training program. He moved to the US in 1999, taking his Master of Arts in Teaching at Marlboro College in Vermont. Professor Bell received his Doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania in 2014.

Before coming to Australia in 2016 his career also spanned the UK and the USA where he (academically) led one of the most successful online growth stories and developed the first federally approved CBE-direct assessment programme. His work has been supported with over US$5million of foundation and federal funding, while his research has been globally commended for its potential to radically enhance student engagement, retention and course completion. At the University of Pennsylvania his doctoral thesis (recently published by JH Press) focused on intrinsic motivators of under-represented minority students.
