Softerfields Listening Session #5
On the Second Floor of a Bar in Sapporo, A Man Quietly Practices His Piano
On the Second Floor of a Bar in Sapporo, A Man Quietly Practices His Piano
There is no spotlight.
Just a narrow staircase, a small room above a bar in Sapporo, and a piano that has seen many late nights.
Before anyone knew his name, Ryo Fukui was already here in spirit. He began playing in his twenties, later than most. He did not train in conservatories. He borrowed time on a piano in a club. He practiced after hours.
In 1976, he released Scenery, now a cult record. The sound is direct and unpolished. You can hear the room. You can hear the effort.
It feels like someone learning in public, taking risks and chasing feelings, rather than perfection.
