About this event

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) will be crucial in assisting society to achieve net-zero emissions, providing a means to reduce emissions from sectors that are challenging to decarbonise. Consequently, the availability of storage is an important factor for the successful deployment of CCS and CCUS projects.

Indonesia could play a significant role in CCUS deployment in the region due to the availability of vast sedimentary basins containing geological media suitable for CO2 storage, such as oil and gas reservoirs and deep saline aquifers. There are a total of 128 sedimentary basins across the Indonesian archipelago. Among them, 20 contain proven oil and gas reservoirs that have demonstrated the ability to store significant quantities of buoyant fluids such as oil, gas, and CO2. The remaining basins consist of 27 discovery basins not yet in production, 12 prospective basins with available seismic and well data, and 69 unexplored basins.

Aligned with the ACN Mission to accelerate decarbonisation in Asia, during FY 2023-2024, ACN, in collaboration with BRIN and Lemigas, will conduct a research study titled 'Estimation Of Indonesia Basin-Scale CO2 Storage.' The objective is to estimate the potential storage capacity of CO2 at the basin level in Indonesia. It is expected that the availability of data will encourage both local and regional investors to actively support CCS and CCUS deployment in Indonesia. The study's results are open and accessible to the public, allowing stakeholders to benefit from the findings.

The report is prepared by a joint team of experts from the Center for Technology Service - National Research and Innovation Agency (Pusyantek - BRIN), the Testing Center for Oil and Gas LEMIGAS - Directorate General of Oil and Gas, and the Center for Geological Survey (PSG) - Geological Agency, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of Indonesia. The report was completed in December 2023.

To gain recognition from stakeholders, ACN will launch the report, followed by knowledge-sharing sessions about the research study results.

Programme and Agenda

Organised by

The Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) is an international organisation providing support to the chair of the ASEAN Summit and the East Asia Summit through policy research focusing on three pillars: deepening economic integration, narrowing development gaps, and achieving sustainable development in the region.

Its establishment was formally agreed among 16 heads of government at the Third East Asia Summit in Singapore on 21 November 2007. It works closely with the ASEAN Secretariat, researchers, and research institutes from East Asia to provide intellectual and analytical research and policy recommendations.

ERIA was ranked ninth out of 85 top International Economic Policy Think Tanks in the 2020 Global Go To Think Tank Index Report (GGTTI) conducted by the Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program (TTSCSP) at the University of Pennsylvania.
