About this event

"Are you able to come to a stop in your life, even for one moment? Could it be this moment? What would happen if you did?"

- Jon Kabat-Zinn

In a world that never stops, where external noise rages on and internal voices are amplified, what better way to carry on than to create a space for us all to simply sit and be in moments of stillness and silence?

Who We Are

The Big Sit is an ongoing community project focusing on the use of urban spaces for mindfulness practice and intentional activity that fosters mental and social health.

How We Began

The Big Sit was initiated over the 2020 pandemic as a way for people to meet and connect in a different way.

The first Big Sit was held on Mindfulness Day, 12 September 2020, at Guoco Tower in Singapore. The space, located in the middle of the city's Central Business District, offered the public accessibility to mindfulness practice and a more intentional way of being.

About The Event

  • Anyone with or without mindfulness / meditation experience is welcome to join.
  • Each session lasts 45-60 minutes, and will be led by an experienced mindfulness meditation teacher.
  • Each session will usually begin with mindful walking and movements, following by a sitting meditation.
  • Please come dressed in comfortable clothes, drinking water, and bring your own yoga mat / towel to sit on.
  • Participants are encouraged to arrive 5-10 minutes earlier to set up your space.
  • Spaces will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis, with paid/donation tickets given front seating nearer to the teacher.
  • Each session will also be streamed online via the Insight Timer app.
  • This is a community initiative. Collections from paid and donation tickets will go to The Big Sit to cover any administrative or miscellaneous costs in reaching out to communities and furthering the advocacy of urban wellbeing and social health.
  • Last but not least, you are encouraged to add this event to your calendar.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get to the venue?

Guoco Tower is connected to Tanjong Pagar MRT Station on the East West line. We are located at the open space at Urban Park on the ground level, in front of Japan Rail Cafe.

Do I need to prepare / bring anything?

You may wish to bring your own yoga mat / towel / cushion to sit on. Have some drinking water with you as well. Please also dress comfortably for the practices. Most importantly, be sure to bring your presence!

I'm not familiar with mindfulness or meditation. Can I still join The Big Sit?

Absolutely! We welcome anyone to join. The mindfulness practices you will be guided in are gentle and simple to follow, and a teacher is always present in case you have questions or need support.

Is this a yoga practice?

The Big Sit is not a yoga practice. On top of practicing in stillness, the teacher will guide the community in some gentle stretching movements as a way to be more aware and mindful of our body.

Does the event include teachings or lectures about mindfulness / meditation?

The Big Sit is curated as an experience of being mindful in the city, and so each event includes only the practice of mindfulness. There will not be any teachings or lectures at the event; however, feel free to approach the teacher if you have questions.

Is this a networking event?

The Big Sit is a social health initiative that encourages people to sit and be together in a more intentional way. While there is no networking involved, you are most welcome to reach out to anyone in the community after the event.

Can I bring my family / friends?

Absolutely! If you feel your loved ones would benefit from being a part of The Big Sit, do encourage them to join. Just be sure to register a space for them!
