Description

The Role of Creatives in Dementia Care

We will hear from two creative enterprises; Mind Palace who are addressing the well-being of the patient and those in their circle of care, and from Our Better World who aim to inform and build empathy, preparing all of us to better manage dementia.

Mind Palace; We all know about VR and AR. But have you thought of using it to help people, like dementia patients in nursing homes?

Find out more from Eugene Soh, a tech artist. He is the founder of Dude Studios (dude.sg), a creative tech studio focusing on Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality, and Mind Palace (mindpalacevr.org), a social enterprise that uses VR to help dementia patients and nursing home residents revisit fond places and explore the world from the comfort and safety of their chairs, keeping their minds active and slowing the effects of dementia.

Our Better World, the digital storytelling initiative of the Singapore International Foundation, is an online media for good platform that helps raise awareness for different social and environmental causes in Asia.

Rebecca Lim, Head of Our Better World will share how digital media, film and storytelling have enabled them to build empathy and understanding. Rebecca will share what they have learnt about the possibilities and challenges of digital storytelling, their work around dementia, and future plans.

About our speakers

Eugene Soh

Eugene Soh a.k.a. DUDE (b. 1987) is a tech artist. He is the founder of Dude Studios, a creative tech studio focusing on Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality, and Mind Palace, a social enterprise that uses VR to help dementia patients and nursing home residents revisit fond places and explore the world from the comfort and safety of their chairs, keeping their minds active and slowing the effects of dementia.

He grew up as a self-taught computer programmer, tinkering with the latest fun technology when he accidentally became an artist after his photographic piece, contextualizing Da Vinci’s Last Supper in a local hawker centre setting, went viral on social media in 2012. That discovery, with its tongue-in-cheek commentary on contemporary life in Singapore, catapulted him into the art world. Many awards and exhibitions later, he hasn’t stopped creating and tinkering.

Rebecca Lim

Rebecca heads up Our Better World (OBW), the digital storytelling initiative of the Singapore International Foundation that leverages the power of stories and digital media for social impact. She leads her team and a regional network of impact storytellers to tell stories of people doing good in Asia. The aim is to inspire online audiences to take action, so that the subjects of their stories (non-profits and social enterprises) get the help they need to impact more lives.

An eternal optimist, she combines her eye for opportunities with her love for people, bringing partners alongside on this journey of pursuing a shared vision of OBW pioneering digital disruption for social impact in Asia. Rebecca’s experience spans strategic communications, integrated marketing, public relations and brand management. Her experience over the last two decades has been in the sectors of her twin passions - tourism and non-profit. After a life changing three-year stint in Mumbai, she now applies her marketing and communications skills to impact lives through digital storytelling.
