The Future of Consumer Choice & Responsibility

SINGAPORE INSTITUTE OF INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRSThe SIIA is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation dedicated to the research, analysis, and discussion of politics, economics, and sustainability. Founded in 1962, it is Singapore’s oldest think tank and ranks as one of the top think tanks in Southeast Asia and the Pacific.Our work on sustainability and the environment focuses on environmental and resource issues faced by Singapore and ASEAN. The SIIA conducts research and encourage dialogue on a range of environmental issues, including the haze, climate change, energy, and the resource sector. Beginning May 2014, SIIA has annually hosted the Singapore Dialogue on Sustainable World Resources (SDSWR), a multi-stakeholder platform that promotes the exchange of best practices between stakeholders of all levels to address sustainability issues in ASEAN’s resource sector.The SIIA regularly convenes dialogues and roundtables on a range of issues facing the international community. Some recent examples include a Minister’s Dialogue on the investment outlook for Singapore in July 2018, and a closed-door dialogue in Singapore in Nov 2018, which focused onopportunities and challenges regarding ASEAN-UK relations in a post-Brexit era.Many leading Singapore-based corporates and financial institutions are SIIA members.

SYNOPSIS: Consumer choices have environmental and social implications. The public’s response to the haze crisis in recent years shows that many people in our region do care about whether the products on supermarket shelves are sustainable. However, without a crisis to draw our attention, we tend to look at the price tag when deciding what to buy, rather than thinking about climate change, packaging waste, or human and animal rights.
 
The talk will explore questions like:
• Are consumers in Asia becoming more conscious about what they buy, or is price still a major factor?
• How can consumers distinguish between “good” and “bad” companies? How can companies communicate their sustainability commitments to their customers?
• Does “voting with your wallet” really make a difference?
• Is it more important to reward good companies or to punish bad ones?
