The inexorable rise in income and wealth inequality is an issue attracting a lot of attention from business leaders, policy makers, politicians and voters.

The rise of populist politicians in Europe and the US, the Brexit vote, the imbalanced nature of Chinese economic development, the distrust of global institutions are all fairly or unfairly attributed to inequality.

So what is inequality, how should we measure it, and why should we even care about inequality?

• We will take a data and event driven approach to understand when and how inequality matters.
• We wil try and understand the key drivers of inequality and the relative roles played by trade vs. technology.
• We will close with thinking through the policy tools to tackle inequality and the responsibility of businesses in this domain.
• We will cast a wide net, spanning issues of ethics, economics, politics, and business.

Pushan Dutt is a Professor of Economics and Political Science at INSEAD. He has won the Best Teacher Award in the INSEAD MBA programme multiple times.

Professor Dutt has worked as an economist at the World Bank's Development Research Group and has also worked as a fellow at the Ford Foundation, and as a writer and consultant for the Oxford University Press

In addition, he has taught microeconomics, economic development, and international trade and finance to undergraduate, MBA, and PhD participants since 1994.
