Reading on screens is here to stay. We once thought the ubiquity of screens with its accompanying distractions will kill our ability for deep immersed reading. Thanks to the rallied efforts of reading experts and thinkers, all hope is not lost as we have developed a better understanding of how the digital medium affects how we read and how to manage them. Still, reading print continues to be key in fostering critical skills. So how do we make the best of both print and screen?

Join Dr Annika Schwabe and Professor Ladislao Salmerón as they discuss how we can build reading practices to optimise reading for both mediums, including audiobooks.

About the Speakers

Ladislao Salmerón is Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Valencia, Spain. He conducts his research at the ERI Lectura, a research unit focused on the study of reading in its multiple facets. He did his PhD in cognitive psychology at the University of Granada, Spain. He was a Fulbright scholar at the Institute of Cognitive Science at the University of Colorado Boulder, USA. His research focuses on digital literacies in different populations. He currently explores how digital reading habits impact comprehension, and how to increase attention to and comprehension of digital texts using online platforms.

Dr. Annika Ahrens-Schwabe is a psychologist and communication scientist who specializes in media psychology. She works at the Department of German Studies of the University of Vienna where she mainly explores the effects of digital media on the reception of texts. Previously, she focussed her research on the effects of digital reading media, but recently started to look into the effects of audiobooks on reception processes.

Khoo Sim Eng (moderator) is Head of Film Studies at the Singapore University of Social Sciences. Previously with the English programme, she is an avid reader and film buff. She has moderated sessions for Ivan Coyote, Gail Carriger, and Amanda Lee Koe, among others, at the Singapore Writers Festival.
