What is this programme about?

Communication ranks highly among the top qualities of a leader. Communication is more than just speaking. Whether you're leading a multi-national organisation or a small team, you want to communicate your ideas and instructions effectively, if you are to succeed. When you communicate effectively, you also become more confident and decisive.

Even something as simple as diction and articulation can determine if you are a leader that inspire others, or just someone who makes the rules. It can make or break your relationship with your people. What are the key challenges for Singaporeans?

1. English is not our native language.

2. We often think in another language (typically Chinese) and translate that message into English.

3. We lack exposure to how English-speaking people think and behave.

Learn from this talk how to think and plan your communication like a leader and then say it in a way that people will listen. Learn also how to build one's foundation in speech so that you understand how to improve on diction and articulation.

This talk targets two key skills for development:

Skill #1: The thinking and planning of communication.

Skill #2: The delivery of messages.

At the end of this talk, the presenter will give a personal assessment to EACH participant the skills needed to become an effective communicator.

If you are in a leadership position, you should pick up some tips from this talk to become a more effective leader. This talk is also great for people about to enter a leadership role, no matter how big or small.

Key Features

Most training in speaking focuses on techniques. This talk focuses on the skill/technique needed to apply those techniques. To give an analogy, you could learn how to fix an engine but it means you only fix a given problem. Wouldn't you rather learn how the engine works so you can fix all types of problem? This talk targets how you plan your communication and not the communication itself.

What does it cover?

At the end of this talk, participants will:

  • Become more aware of the skills needed to become an effective communicator.
  • Understand what training each learner needs to become a more effective communicator.
  • Better appreciate the level of competition that exists to achieve success simply through communicating more effectively and confidently.

About the speaker

Mr Joseph Wong

Principal Consultant | Delapro

Joseph spent 36 years with Standard Chartered Bank before deciding to leave in 2015 to pursue his personal goals in life "while I am still healthy". Among the roles he held in what was his only and most passionate career were:

• Business re-engineering

• Quality management

• ISO 9001 certification

• System design and training

• Global sales proposal

• Digital learning

In his role as Director in an international bank, he helmed the global proposal writing team in the Transaction Banking division and spearheaded the digital learning programme in the capacity of developer and training consultant.

Pedagogy

Joseph started his own training company Delapro (www.delapro.com.sg) in 2015 with the aim of putting his vast knowledge and experience to good use. He obtained his ACTA certificate in September 2016 and has since also got his Phonetics Workshop (CRS-N-0041012) onto the approved list of courses offered under SkillsFuture Credit. Joseph has dedicated all of 2017 to educating as many people in Singapore as possible to speak better English through learning phonetics and intends to continue this drive in 2018.

Authorship

Joseph has also written his first book for children titled I'm So Ready For Life, which launched in August 2017. He believes that in order for today's children to be better prepared for a digital future, they need to understand how the real world works a lot earlier in their lives. His three-book series teaches economics, leadership and decision-making to children. He believes that children are capable of learning anything so long as the language is right.

Joseph is a firm believer in sharing knowledge from his own career experience. He is launching a new 3-hour training programme in 2018 to prepare fresh graduates for a life of career, which also doubles as mind-setting training for those about to step into management. This crucial training is given the tongue-in-cheek title "The Three Monsters That Destroy your Career". Ask Joseph about this programme.
