Void Deck

The Runaway Company has its humble beginnings as a collective of musical theatre enthusiasts called The Broadway Babies. Starting with a small group of 10 performing a musical item in a school production, they went on to put up a sold-out Broadway revue with the school’s support (No Day But Today, 2017). The next year, they wrote, produced and performed an original, independent musical production (Runaway, 2018). It was only at the end of 2018, however, that The Runaway Company was officially founded. The team consisted of original organisational members of The Broadway Babies, as well as other passionate youths they had connected with through past productions.Along the way, the team’s vision had also expanded from only musical theatre to all sorts of productions that combine music and theatre. We found that music as a storytelling device was able to communicate emotions, moods and atmospheres that dialogue and spectacle could not convey. On the other hand, theatre brought to life the broad brushstrokes of music, detailing specific relationships, backstories and personalities that audiences connect with. Our vision today is an integration of both, in whatever form and combination.We believe that together, these two elements are able to powerfully communicate the stories of our fellow youths that we feel need to be told. Stories of our aspirations and dreams, as well as of our worries and struggles, no matter how huge or how insignificant these issues seem. Stories that give perspective to how varied the youth experience can be.Today, TRC continues to bring together youths of diverse backgrounds: some with experience, some with none; some just out of school, some not so young - but all of us are connected by our strong belief that this platform that TRC provides needs to exist. TRC allows all of us to exchange our expertise, share our connections, provide mutual feedback on our work: to grow together. It gives us the chance to set the pace and scope of our own learning and supports us in charting our own growth trajectory. The TRC team would have no greater joy than to know that all youths who love music-theatre love and connect with our productions, and could see themselves finding a place in our community.

<P>Seven years ago, six friends sought refuge at a void deck in a quiet neighbourhood and found a home to make music in. The empty space became a place to conjure worlds and harmonies. But as the music fizzled out, so did the ties that bind the six together. Seven years later, they decided to reunite: to rekindle the flame they once shared at the very same void deck. But years of separation have created a chasm between them as they are forced to confront a friendship that may not have stood the test of time. As they reminisce and remember, old grudges are unearthed and tensions flare. What do we let go of and what do we hold on to as we grow up?</P>
