About this event

Windmills & Ricefields are idyllic sceneries of batik souvenir cloth brought back by the Dutch soldiers after their stay in Dutch East Indies. These souvenir cloth have a very unique format and ingrained with the memories of their homes in different places.

In this intimate session, we learn about how batik can be a form of storytelling as we breakdown the the “Who, What, Where” components of a narrative. Curator Sabine Bolk will first introduce the history of batik souvenir cloth. Illustrator Quek Hong Shin will then breakdown the template and guide participants to draw (i.e. both to reflect and to sketch) their own memories into a souvenir cloth format.

Join us in rediscovering how personal memories and cultural history intertwine. Step into the past, reflect on the present, and create a keepsake that captures your story through the timeless language of batik.

Their mission is to connect artists and collectors to uncover and to understand the rich culture, technological development and historical significance of this ancient art technique.
