COPTIC BINDING WORKSHOP
Presented by Based Book Arts
Join us for a 2-hour beginner-friendly workshop and discover the ancient art of Coptic binding – a style of bookbinding that traces its origins back to the 2nd century developed by the early Christian Copts of Egypt. Known for its intricate chain-like stitches and exposed spine, Coptic binding is celebrated as some of the earliest forms of the modern codex [the book as we know it today].
In this workshop, you’ll create your own handcrafted journal using the Coptic binding method. This non-adhesive binding style and expose spine allows the book to open completely flat - ideal for writing, sketching, or displaying. Personalise your journal by selecting from a variety of cover papers and thread colours, making your creation one-of-a-kind.
At the end of the workshop, you’ll take home a beautiful and functional journal - perfect as a sketchbook, notebook, or a meaningful handmade gift.
All materials and tools will be provided. This workshop is suitable for beginners, and welcomes participants ages 13 and above. No prior experience is required.
