About this event
Young Writers Lab 2023 - Create your own storytelling game!
What is a Storytelling Game exactly? Click here to find out!
In this event, we will introduce participants to the methods and processes of how TTRPG (tabletop roleplaying game) writers and designers build fantasy worlds and turn them into playable, interactive experiences. Participants work in groups to workshop their own stories to create storytelling games of their own.
From video games to tabletop board games, serious games to casual mobile games, people across the globe are captivated and engaged by games in their myriad forms. For many players, the narrative and storytelling in the games they play are a key part of why they are compelling. But what makes a narrative ʻplayableʼ, and what even is a game anyway?
Module 1: World-building Module 2: Planning your Game
Learning Outcomes
Build rich fantasy worlds and interesting characters - Worlds are only the beginning to a deep narrative. By building detailed, intricate worlds and thinking about the characters that inhabit these worlds, participants learn how people, cultures and their environments are inextricably linked.
Spark an interest in storytelling game creation - For many students, this will be their first introduction to the process of game creation. The workshop provides students not only a simple toolset to start their own game making process, but also a deeper appreciation for the work that goes into creating ʻentertainmentʼ.
Gain an insight to more nuanced narrative building - When thinking of narratives as interactive games, participants have to break down their stories into their component parts to rearrange, rework or even choose what to discard. This process creates a deeper understanding into what makes a compelling narrative for the media they consume.
Suitable For
- Participants aged 14 to 18
- No writing experience required
- Interest in creating stories or narratives
