Puʻuhonua Society is a community arts and culture organization committed to Hawaiʻi and its abundant futures. Founded in 1972, the work has been passed down through three generations of Native Hawaiian women. We are active at the intersections of contemporary art, cultural practice, environmental stewardship, transformational education and community archiving. We do this for artists, cultural practitioners, and the Hawai’i community by:

Supporting basic-needs through direct-to-artist grants, commissions, project funding, studio space and professional development
Creating accessible platforms through exhibitions, archives, libraries, film screenings, and publications
Nurturing health and healing through workshops, gatherings, mentorships, fiscal sponsorships, fellowships and collaborations
Affirming expansive, responsive and inclusive definitions of art

Our primary efforts include: Aupuni Space an artist-run gallery, venue, and studios; Hoʻākea Source, a Regional Regranting Program Partner of The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts; Hoʻomau Nā Maka o ka ʻĀina, a cataloging and public programming partnership aimed at preserving and making accessible Nā Maka o ka ‘Āina’s vital moving-image archive of over 6,500 tapes; KEANAHALA, an inclusive and collaborative weaving program that perpetuates the Native Hawaiian practice of ulana lauhala, pandanus weaving; KĪPUKA, a makers’ space and educational environment offering a series of classes and workshops that are focused around the transmission of ancestral knowledge and material practices; The Muʻumuʻu Library, a community library of over 500 muʻumuʻu dresses, patterns, and literature providing lending services and sewing workshops that directly counters historical narratives of cultural erasure through the preservation and celebration of this iconic Hawaiian garment; andNiUNOW!, a cultural agroforestry movement affirming the importance of niu and uluniu, coconut and coconut groves to the health and wellbeing of Hawaiʻi and its peoples.
