Jasline Lock

Hi I’m Jasline, I have 16 years of parenting experience and a full time working mum to 2 happy and high achieving children studying in the Top 5 secondary schools in Singapore. I have learnt from many books, websites and from really life experiences that helped me to groom them to be where they are now. I’m happy to share these experiences with any parent who are out there wanting to take small steps to raising happy amazing children!

I will also share tips to help parents with strategies to help their children to develop a healthy mental being, self-esteem, as well as nurture their talents and bond easily with them!

During the course of my parenting experience as a busy mum, we need to be equipped with knowledge about food and nutrition so that we can gain health and feel more energised to deal with the everyday challenges of running the household. More importantly, we can be better equipped with knowledge to influence our children’s food habits for life! We will be then be empowered to have the means to improve our children’s health which is an integral part of raising happy and amazing children!

Hi everyone, I’m Jasline here. I am sharing about myself. I was born in a 1 room flat in Chinatown, Singapore in the 1970s. My parents didn’t have much formal education but they emphasised a lot on nutrition and education. My mum had a huge influence on my values and beliefs towards parenting. I saw her so devoted to my brother and I, caring and loving us. She only had a few years of education but she set high expectations for both of us to do well in school. My brother and I both graduated from Nanyang Technological University without tuiton! In this family photo, you can see our family with my parents at the bottom left.

From her, I saw the strength of how mothers can influence their children just by instilling powerful values and in turn groom them to achieve academic success even though they are not well –educated.

I believed that Parenting is the most important role anyone can even be in and when I became a mum at a tender age of 25, I am determined to be the best mum I can be. My first born was a girl, her name is Vanessa and she is easy to care for and most importantly she picked things up fast and I was very hands on iwith her early years especially in reading and English proficiency. She took an interest in their studies and fall in love in learning. She scored well in all her subjects and topped her class year after year. I found out that the reason behind her academic strength lies in her strong English proficiency. This is a very important skill and her confidence in English made her stronger in her understanding of Maths and Science. As her mum, I was stress free, and our efforts in early years paid off, as she became a self-directed learner, topping her class each year and saving us thousands of tuition fees! In Primary 3, she was selected to be on the Gifted Program which caters to the top 1% of the students with outstanding intelligence. Not only she is academically strong, she is an all-rounder, loved to engage in leadership roles, experiencing all the possibilities in whatever school programs and competitions can give her. The glory she achieved from young stood her well among her peers which I believed are the path to achieving more in life later on. I found out that we as parents have the ability to influence our children to strive for better grades, achievements in life if we want to. I attained much joy and satisfaction seeing her grow and I want to share my experience with other parents so that their parenthood can be stress-free, enjoyable and fulfilled!

My journey as a parent was not so smooth sailing after I gave birth to my son three years later. My son turned out to be totally opposite of my daughter! He was hot tempered, didn’t like learning and often made trouble in his preschool. Many times, I had to see the principal, the teachers and parents of the classmates he had hurt physically or hurt verbally. I was depressed, ashamed, felt hopeless and stressed out. During the early years, I do not want to bring my son out as he can publicly embarrassed me through his actions. My son often distracted his classmates and teachers found him very uncontrollable.

I researched through books, the internet and seeking help from other mummies to understand my son. I had to seek professional therapies and psychologist. And as young as 7 years old, and he was diagnosed as having ODD( Oppositional Defiant Disorder). I found the news to be devastating as I am worried if he will be able to pass his exams in future, get into university, find a job and support himself in future! It was challenging with the fact that I was working full time as well. However with my perseverance and with tried and tested own methods, I found the key to help him to improve his behaviour, influenced him to love learning and taught him ways to do better in his studies. As a result, my son did exceptionally well in 2019 PSLE and even selected for the School Based Gifted Education(SBGE) Program in one of the Top IP schools in Singapore! I felt triumphant and very satisfied being his mum!
