ReelLIFE SCIENCE
ReelLIFE SCIENCE is a video/animation contest for youth organisations and schools, which encourages young people to engage with science and technology in a creative way, while developing their digital and communications skills.
Participants are challenged to research a Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths (STEM) topic and communicate it for the public via an entertaining and educational 1-3 minute video/ animation. This can be a brand new topic or something the young people are already passionate about or are working on, e.g. documenting and explaining the science behind an environmental or technological group project.
Videos and animations can be made on smartphones, cameras or tablets, in English or Irish. In the Youth Group Category, the best video will win €1000, with €500 for 2nd place and €250 for 3rd place. Winning videos and animations will also be screened for the public at the Galway Science and Technology Festival in University of Galway in November, and all participants will receive a ‘ReelLIFE SCIENCE Challenger’ certificate of participation.
Through our community partners Foróige, we also offer free online training in video production/animation to youth workers, teachers and adults working with young people. Please contact reellifescience.youthgroups@gmail.com for more information and to book trainings.
There are also opportunities for youth groups to meet a scientist and discuss video ideas through one-hour STEM Ambassador visits (online or in-person depending on availability in your area).
Launched by University of Galway scientists in 2013, more than 23,000 young people have taken part in almost 700 youth groups and schools in Ireland and Northern Ireland. Previous years’ youth group videos, from building wind generators to tree planting and learning about Covid-19, can be seen at www.youtube.com/ReelLifeScience.
You will find the online application form, downloadable ‘How-To’ guides and lots more information at www.reellifescience.com.
