Design a Chair Series: 1-day Camp (Dec)

Join us for an immersive 1-day workshop where we’ll go beyond the four legs and discover the art and science of ergonomic design. We will have fun learning and dive deep into the fusion of form, function, and comfort of chair designs.

The Anatomy of a Chair

We will kick off the day by exploring the fascinating history of chairs; how they have evolved from simple seats for ancient royalty to specialized tools for comfort and productivity in the modern age. We will examine iconic designs that have shaped our understanding of what a chair can be, from humble stools to the revolutionary lounge chairs.

Students will be introduced to the principles of ergonomics, including posture support, how a chair can support the natural curve of your lower back and how it can evenly spread out your body weight Students will learn why a chair isn't just a place to sit, but a tool that can either enhance or harm one's well-being.

Following that, the real creativity begins! Students will put theory into practice by sketching and conceptualizing their own custom chairs. They’ll reference these three core functions to design for:

• Relaxing/Lounging: How can a chair promote ultimate relaxation?
• Studying: How can a chair enhance focus and concentration?
• Playing: How can a chair supports gaming or play experience?

Ideas for Chair Designs

Using a range of materials, students will build tangible mini-prototypes of their chair designs and they will get to showcase their creations to peers and observe the diverse range of solutions addressing the function of a chair.
