About this event

Learn the dos and don'ts of writing book reviews, whether for professional publications or social media. Participants should have an interest in reviewing books for at least social media such as Instagram.

During this course, you will learn about the different types of book reviews, the structure of a review, tips for reading with an eye to reviewing, and how to find your own voice as a critic. You will also get to practise composing a short review for social media of a book you have already read, and share it with other aspiring reviewers.

Participants would need to bring along a book that they have read beforehand and would like to work on a review for.

Facilitator:

Olivia Ho is an Assistant Life Editor at Straits Times Life; she was formerly the books and arts correspondent, and before that covered news on employment and the labour market. She graduated from University College London with first class honours in English and has a masters degree in modern and postmodern literature from the University of Edinburgh. She has reviewed more than 200 books for ST and also runs a #bookstagram account, @ohomatopoeia.

Cancellation:

The workshop can be cancelled or postponed two weeks before the workshop date if the minimum number of participants is not met. Participants will be fully refunded for workshops cancelled by us.

Participants who are unable to attend a workshop they have registered for are to inform us of the reason two weeks before the workshop date. They will be fully refunded in the event of extenuating and mitigating circumstances (E.g. illness, bereavement, accidents). Those who inform us up to 5 working days before the workshop date will receive a 50% refund. Those who did not turn up at the workshop will not receive a refund.

Upon registration, you are deemed to have read and understood the cancellation and withdrawal policy and accept the terms contained therein.
