About the Factory

The story of Tai Hua Soy Sauce begins in 1932 when its founder Pek Cheng Chuan arrived in Singapore from China.

While here, he took on a variety of jobs as he attempted to find his footing. He was at one point a construction worker, motor mechanic and a chauffeur. Along the way he suffered from a failed coffeeshop venture. During the Sino-Japanese War, Mr Pek left Singapore. Upon his return, he found a job as a manager at the Chung Sing Jit Poh newspaper.

Soon after, the owner of a soy sauce factory known as Xin Mei Zhou, met up with Mr Pek and suggested that he could try running such a facility of his own. Mr Pek decided to give the industry a shot after consulting with experts in the field and raising sufficient capital for his venture. Success did not come easy. The business floundered for many years. However, it managed to find its sweet spot after Mr Pek decided to adjust the soy sauce brew he was putting out based on his own research and intuition and in reference to a book he had purchased. The rest, as they say, is history.

The facility has over time moved from Pearl’s Hill to Jalan Toh Guan. Today it is located at Jalan Besut. The household brand is now run by Thomas Pek, Tai Hua’s third-generation owner.
