About this event

Hi, I'm Mary Lamb, Founder and Lead Trainer at Accentutor (find out more about me at the bottom of this page or at www.accentutor.com).

During this workshop, I will teach you the secrets of natural spoken English, setting you on your path to clearer, sharper English communication.

This 'Pronunciation Fundamentals' workshop is an in-person intensive two-day workshop held on two consecutive Saturdays (Saturday 10th September, 9 am - 5 pm & Saturday 17th September 2022, 9 am - 5 pm) in Central Singapore.

This workshop is for anyone interested in improving their pronunciation of English. This course is especially beneficial for non-native English speaking professionals looking to enhance their communication and presentation skills in English. It would also be helpful to Singapore English speaking professionals who'd like to learn more about the features of British English pronunciation so that they can 'code-switch' during interviews, meetings and presentations (I teach British English as I'm from the UK).

You will receive personalised feedback on your pronunciation (at the beginning and end of the workshop). In addition, you will learn to independently analyse texts in order to predict the pronunciation, basic intonation, word and sentence stress and connected speech that a native speaker might use. This skill is especially beneficial in helping you prepare your own scripts for presentations, speeches, or videos.

Over the two days, we will cover:

  • Maximising the International Phonetic Alphabet for Pronunciation Learning
  • Making the 44 Sounds of British English
  • The Power of Schwa for Natural Speech
  • Word and Sentence Stress in English
  • Features of Connected Speech in English
  • English Intonation
  • Analysing a Script for Presentation and Speech Preparation

Workshop Goals:

For each participant to be able to:

  • Recognise ALL 44 IPA phonetic symbols and use the dictionary to independently check pronunciation and word stress.
  • Produce ALL 44 sounds of British English with a clear feeling of how we physically make each sound in the mouth.
  • Independently analyse a text and predict basic intonation, word and sentence stress and connected speech features.
  • Achieve a significant improvement from the initial core text recording to the final core text recording.

Pre-course:

We start with a couple of light pre-workshop tasks to set you up nicely for day one of the workshops. We ask you to:

  • Study our free e-flashcards of the International Phonetic Alphabet (for around 30 minutes per day for seven days before the course).
  • Record yourself reading the core workshop text aloud and send it to us (this text will be around 200-300 words, giving us a pre-course 'benchmark' of your pronunciation that we will compare with a second recording at the end of the course).

Post-course:

After the workshop, we will give you a model recording of the core workshop text and visual guidelines showing the phonetics, stress, intonation, and connected speech features.

We ask you to apply what you've learned by practising for 30 minutes every day between the workshop sessions and seven days after the workshop ends.

After seven days, we ask you to send us a second recording of the core workshop text, and you will receive detailed feedback on your improvements and areas for further focus.

Class Size:

The workshop is limited to 12 places.

Course prerequisites:

Be available to attend both workshop days (Saturday, 10th September, 9 am - 5 pm & Saturday, 17th September 2022, 9 am - 5 pm).

We require participants to have an English level of B2 or above (because I conduct the course in English).

Establishing a Regular Practice:

It takes a great deal of personal commitment and dedication to completely change your accent or pronunciation (it's a little bit like learning a new musical instrument!). We designed this course to provide you with a solid foundational knowledge of English pronunciation and its key features. Most students will find it beneficial to build from this foundation and establish a regular practice to see and feel significant and lasting changes in their pronunciation. At Accentutor, we offer ongoing weekly group and one-to-one classes that help you build your training routine to see long-term, lasting results.

Refunds and Absence:

While we don't offer refunds for participants unable to attend after booking, we are happy for you to transfer your ticket to a friend, colleague or family member up to seven days before the course commences. Please ensure that your replacement meets the course prerequisites above and please provide me with their contact details.

If you are absent, it is not possible to make up a missed class by attending an equivalent class on another day. There are no refunds for missed classes.

Cancellation:

In the unlikely event of the course being cancelled by us due to insufficient enrolments, you will receive a full refund or credit. Enrolled participants will be informed one week before the workshop date if the course will be cancelled or postponed due to the minimum number of participants not being met.

Video and Photography:

During the class, photography and videography may be taken of the students. If you wish to opt-out, please email hello@accentutor.com.

By submitting this registration form, you have read and agree to the above terms and conditions.
